Gay adoption is one of the subjects that raise most of the
discussions about the rights of homosexual men and women in nearly every country.
A controversial subject involving political, religious and cultural standpoints
that may influence and raise other important questions. Today in the USA, only
one state (Florida) bans completely gay adoption. In other nine states, gay adoption is open for any gay and lesbian couple.
One of the most important questions pointed by specialists would be the guarantee
of a regular and healthy development to a child that grows in the environment
of a gay adoption. Obviously, sexual orientation can't be a factor to determine
if someone would be a good parent or not, but there are other factors that have
to be taken into account. It is necessary to prepare the child (and to be prepared)
to explain why she lives in a environment with two same-sex partners while the
majority of her friends and classmates live in heterosexual homes. In addition,
children raised by homosexual couples are unfortunately likely to suffer with
pranks and mocking by other children. However, researches made about gay adoption
have showed that children have the exact same conditions to successfully grow
and develop in such situation as if they were being raised by a homosexual couple.
When it comes to gay adoption, there's also the question of the large
amount of children without homes in any part of the world. There are not enough
couples (mother-and-father based) to offer themselves as families to those children.
On the other side of the coin of gay adoption, there are many homosexual
couples that are unable to raise a child of their own due to obvious biological
questions as result of their sexual orientation, despite their desire to raise
a child. Gay adoption seems like a very simple math question if we keep
the children's best interest at heart. Many countries already changed their
legislations to allow gay adoption, resulting in a significant diminishing
in the number of children waiting for adoption.
